What we know now about the development of AI and where it’s headed

While computers of the time could carry out instructions, they had no way to keep track of what they had already done. In his work “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” published in 1950, Alan Turing described how to create intelligent machines and how to test this intelligence. Five years later, during the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence, the first AI programme was shown to the public (DSPRAI). What happened here sparked a new era in artificial intelligence study that lasted several decades.

During that span of time from 1957 to 1974, computers saw significant speed, cost, and availability improvements. There have been significant advancements in machine learning algorithms since 1970, when one of the DSPRAI hosts predicted (to Life Magazine) that a machine would have the general intelligence of an average person within three to eight years. Despite their usefulness, computers spent the next decade stymied in their pursuit of artificial intelligence due to their inefficient data storage and processing.

AI was resurrected in the 1980’s with the expansion of the algorithmic toolbox and more devoted funds. “Deep learning” techniques, developed by John Hopefield and David Rumelhart, let computers learn from their mistakes. Expert systems, developed by Edward Feigenbaum, attempt to simulate human judgement. In spite of a lack of public support and official financing, AI advanced rapidly over the next two decades and accomplished several firsts. Grandmaster and defending World Chess Champion Gary Kasparov lost to IBM’s Deep Blue computer programme in 1997. In the same year, Windows began supporting Dragon Systems’ speech recognition software. Kismet, an emotional robot, was also created by Cynthia Breazeal.

In 2016, Google’s AlphaGo algorithm beat Go master Lee Se-dol and in 2017, Libratus, a poker-playing supercomputer beat the greatest human players.

A clustering technique, an association algorithm, or a neural network may be used if the data is not labelled.
